Revelation 1:6 > To Him Be Glory

2/25/2022

1:6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

And hath made us kings and priests
  • hath made = has recreated/transformed
  • us = all true believers
  • kings = conquerers over our sinful natures; having a foundation (source) of power (Christ)
  • priests = one who offers sacrifices (self-sacrifice); one who has devoted their life to Christ
unto God and his Father;
  • unto = in the sight of; for the glory of
  • God = God the Father
  • and = which is to say
  • his = Jesus Christ's
  • Father = God the Father
John states here the result of Christ's love for us which he described in the previous verse:
  • v5: Christ "loves us" > Died for our sins and forgives us = Frees us from the penalty of sin = Justification
  • v5: Christ "washes us from our sins in his own blood" > Empowers us to overcome sin by faith in Christ to live in us through the Holy Spirit = Frees us from the power of sin = Sanctification
  • v6: As a result, Christ "makes us kings and priests unto God" > Reconciles us to God = becoming the sons and daughter of God.
The Gospel of Christ (His incarnation, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension/mediation)
is the power of God to save every one that believes in Him. (Romans 1:16)
to him be glory and dominion
  • him = Jesus Christ
  • be = belongs, be given
  • glory = praise, honour, majesty, perfection, worship
  • dominion = strength, power, might, authority, sovereignty
for ever and ever. Amen.
  • For ever = for a period of time; for as long as it may last (in the case of divinity, ever = eternity)
  • and ever = added for emphasis, "for all eternity"
  • Amen = firm, faithful, truly; so it is, so be it, may it be fulfilled; Believe!
The term "for ever" used in the Bible does NOT have the same meaning as the term "forever" used today.
  • When we say "forever," we generally mean: always, continually, eternally, for all future time.
  • However, I will love you "forever" refers at best in practical terms to "for the rest of my life."
  • Likewise In biblical times, "for ever" simply meant "for as long as something will last," without interruption.
  • Only when referring to God does "for ever" equate to "for eternity."

1:6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
